The last time I wrote a post like this was two years ago and well, a lot has changed since 2016. Back then I was working for my family’s outdoors store and these days I’m a stay at home mom so my day-to-day looks completely different than it used to.
Believe it or not, I did not aspire to be a stay at home mom. I had hoped after Emme was born that I would return to work at least part time but life had other ideas. While I’m grateful to have been able to stay home with Emme for the last year, I’m looking forward to going back to work in some capacity. Whether that be to finally learn how to make an income off this here blog (the dream scenario) or going back to the corporate world (or both!), only time will tell.
Some days are different than others but this is what an average day looks like in the Wiggle household.
8:00 am // Emme and I wake up. (Adam left for work hours ago.) In a perfect world I would wake up earlier so I could shower and enjoy some time in the morning for myself… but let’s be real – I like to sleep and thankfully so does Emme. I bring her to bed with me to nurse.
8:30 am // Breakfast time! Emme isn’t a big breakfast fan. I don’t know if this is a characteristic she got from me because I’m not a fan either or if she’s just not that hungry after nursing. But she usually has Cheerios and either fruit or yogurt with some juice and I usually have a bowl of cereal. On weekends I cook a big breakfast for Adam so she’ll have things like eggs and hashbrowns. We watch an episode of Sesame Street while we eat. (We don’t have cable in our new house so we rely on the PBS Kids app on our Roku, which is awesome.)
9:00 am // Once breakfast is over, I change Emme out of her pajamas and we spend some time playing. If I need to shower, I’ll set her on the floor in my room with some toys while I bathe. Right now she’s really into playing with cups and balls as well as egg shakers, books, and her xylophone.
10:30 am // It’s time for Emme’s first nap of the day. Some days we skip this morning nap to run errands or head to the library for story time. But Emme really does better with two naps per day so a lot of times we stay home in the mornings and run errands in the afternoon. During her nap I pick up around the house, throw in some laundry, and work on the blog. If we have somewhere to be in the afternoon, I’ll finish getting myself ready.
12-12:30 pm // Emme wakes up from her nap and it’s time for lunch. This meal varies from day to day. Sometimes it’s sandwiches, other times it’s leftovers. Occasionally we eat lunch out but that’s very rare.
1:00 pm // We tend to both get cabin fever so I try to get out of the house every afternoon even if that just means going for a walk around the neighborhood or hanging out in the backyard. We might run errands, check out a local park, or do research for the blog. But we only have a couple of hours before Emme is ready for her afternoon nap.
3:00 pm // It’s time for Emme’s afternoon nap. I usually nurse her before laying her down. I’m really trying to get her weaned during the day to make the transition to daycare easier so she’s down to only nursing three to four times per day. Once she’s down, I tend to do the same types of things during this nap as I did for the morning nap.
4:00 pm // Emme usually only sleeps about an hour during her afternoon nap. Adam is usually home by now and, since he’s currently in school, working on any projects that need to be done for the next day. He plays with Emme while I get her snack ready. If we haven’t gone outside that day, we’ll go for a walk around the neighborhood.
5:30 pm // I start getting dinner ready. I really like to have everything ready by 6:00 but sometimes we eat a little bit later. (Before Emme, we ate late every night, usually around 8:00 but we’ve had to kick that habit to fit her schedule.) I’m a lazy cook so we eat a lot of quick dinners. Every once in a while I get a wild hair and make something fancy but one pot meals are my jam.
7:00 pm // By now we’ve finished eating dinner. Adam cleans up the kitchen while I get Emme ready for bed. When she was younger I didn’t bathe her every day but now I put her in the tub for routine. Most nights I don’t actually wash her with soap; I just rinse off any remnants from dinner and let her play in the water for a few minutes. I get Emme into her pajamas and we read a book and play in her room before her (hopefully) last nursing session.
8:00 pm // I put Emme to bed. She usually goes to sleep very easily at night. Adam and I watch TV and relax before bed. I try to stay off my computer after dinner because once I get my brain going creatively, I have a hard time shutting it off.
9:30 pm // Adam and I are in bed. (Younger me scoffs at this bed time, ha!) He falls asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. I stay up for a little while reading or scrolling through social media. Ideally I’m asleep by 10:30. Emme sleeps through the night most of the time but some nights she’s up once and I nurse her for a few minutes before putting her back to bed.
… and we start it all over again the next day!
