Get #FlatOutrageous at Tijuana Flats

Last week I was invited to try out the new #FlatOutrageous menu at Tijuana Flats. In case you’ve been living under a rock, tacos are my favorite (proof here) and Tijuana Flats is one of my favorite taco joints in town. So, needless to say I said, “Yes! Sign me up!” (Literally, that’s what my email response said.)

The first Tijuana Flats location opened up in Winter Park, Florida in 1995 by Brian Wheeler who had a dream for a fast casual tex-mex restaurant that didn’t take itself too seriously. There are now more than 100 locations in six different states. Each location features a hot sauce bar with a collection of quirky sauces in varying levels of heat including their signature Smack My Ass line and, my personal favorite, Don’t Be A Chicken Shit. (That’s what it’s really called, swearsies!) In January 2007, Brian started the Just In Queso foundation which has raised over $3.5 million for charities. So, not only do they offer delicious food, they’re also upstanding citizens which is a win-win in my book.

First up on the #FlatOutrageous menu is a trio of street tacos starting with the Baja Fish Tacos. Crispy cod is topped with shaved cilantro cabbage, pineapple salsa, and chipotle crema. I have to admit that I’m not typically a fan of fish tacos but these were good. Also, that pineapple salsa needs it’s own spotlight. Bring me some to eat with those chips!

Up next is the Lime Steak Tacos. Grilled garlic lime steak is topped with shaved cilantro cabbage, pico de gallo, cotija cheese (aka Mexican feta), and avocado crema. This was my favorite of the three. The steak was tender and juicy and the accoutrements melded together perfectly.

The final round of street tacos was the Jerk Chicken Tacos. Crispy jerk chicken is tossed in MoreFire! hot sauce and topped wth shaved cilantro cabbage, pineapple salsa, and cotija cheese. This taco is spicy and not for the faint of heart but the heat comes with a great flavor.

This next dish has been the most popular off the menu. Philly Cheesesteak Flautas with shaved sirloin steak, mozzarella cheese, grilled onions and peppers and served with a GIANT bowl of queso to dip. These were good, guys. Like, really really good. But maybe that’s just the queso talking. Either way, highly recommended.

The last item on the #FlatOutrageous menu is actually a dish that’s been on the menu for a while – the Bangin’ Chicken Tostadas. Crispy corn tortillas are topped with Smack My Ass Banging’ Chicken, refried beans, cheddar jack cheese, grilled onions and peppers, tomatoes, and ranch dressing. You might be happy to know that these tostadas had some kick but weren’t near as spicy as the Jerk Chicken tacos. Personally, I would prefer these with grilled or blackened chicken instead of fried, but that’s me.

And the last item of the night was Tijuana Flats signature Cookie Dough Flautas. Chocolate chip cookie dough is wrapped in tortillas, fried until the dough is still gooey, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and served with hot chocolate sauce for dipping. Guys, I live for these. They are so sinful but so delicious.

I definitely recommend stopping by Tijuana Flats to try the new #FlatOutrageous menu. If I had to pick, the Lime Steak Tacos were my favorite of the night followed by the Philly Cheesesteak Flautas. There are nine locations in Jacksonville so chances are there’s a Tijuana Flats near you. For more information or to check out the full menu, visit tijuanaflats.com.

Big thanks to Tijuana Flats Lakewood for the invite and hospitality. All opinions are my own.
